Arto

Little Arto is growing fast and he’s full of personality! At two years old and 7.9 kg, he’s as playful as ever—especially when his best friend Harapi is by his side.

With Harapi around, Arto is bold and confident, happily approaching orangutans of all sizes to play. But when Harapi isn’t with him, he becomes a little more cautious, preferring to stay close to his keepers for reassurance.

Food-wise, Arto has quite the sweet tooth! He loves durian, guava, rambutan, and bananas, but he’s not a fan of green vegetables like water spinach, mustard greens, or cabbage. That said, during Jungle School, he’s learning to forage like a wild orangutan, happily munching on ficus, young leaves, and tree branches. One of his favourite treats on a hot day is a tasty, refreshing cocount- we love this video of Arto enjoying a giant coconut that is bigger than his head!

One of his favourite new activities is shaking tree branches whenever he spots another orangutan—a playful habit that always gets a reaction! He has also been spotted making little nests under the enclosures to sit in, showing the first signs of natural nesting behaviour. He’s a social butterfly, enjoying playtime with many orangutans, including Jainul, who matches his playful energy. Recently, he had a brief episode of diarrhea, but he’s now back to his energetic self.

Physically, Arto is growing well—his thighs have lengthened by 3 cm, and his body length has increased from 40 cm to 46 cm in the last few months. His problem-solving skills, however, are still a work in progress—if an enrichment challenge is too tricky, Arto tends to give up quickly and move on to something else. But if it involves durian, his favourite treat, he might just try a little harder!

Thank you for being part of Arto’s journey! Your support is helping him gain the confidence, skills, and strength he needs for his future in the wild.
