Popi

At 8 years and 5 months old, Popi continues to be one of the most cheerful, confident, and attention-loving young orangutans in our care.

Beatiful Popi having a snack at Jungle School

Weighing 20.2 kg, she’s gained a healthy 1 kg since October—a great sign of her steady progress!

Popi has a big personality—she’s playful, a bit of a diva in front of the camera, and always eager for attention. Check out this hilarious video of her being dramatic at Jungle School.

Popi enjoys playing alone or with her favourite keepers but sometimes she plays with Astuti, Jainul, or other orangutans. Popi’s favourite foods are liana, Chinese cabbage, carrot, banana, leaves and forest fruits. Her least favourite food is cucumber. Popi also loves playing in water as this wonderful video shows.

One of Popi’s most fascinating traits is her observant nature. She watches everything people do and has learned how to use tools—like using tree branches or sticks to pick up food stuck in pipes or to pry food out, knocking food out of tubes, and even mimicking humans’ relaxing poses!

Popi is now in quarantine while we wait for government approval to move her to a forested pre-release island. She has been keeping herself entertained—rolling around, stretching, and playing with her feet. The keepers have been giving Popi, Charlotte and Devi lots of extra enrichment while they wait to move to the island and reach the next stage of their rehabilitation journey.

Your support is making Popi’s journey possible, helping her fine tune the skills she’ll need for her future in the wild. Thank you for being a part of her story.
