Sam was found desperately searching for food in garbage along the side of the road. His safety was at risk, and he was dangerously close to coming into conflict with humans.
To give Sam every chance of survival, our team made the decision to translocate him to the Gunung Batu Mesangat protected forest in Borneo.
Translocation is the careful, hands-on process of safely capturing an orangutan from an area where they're at risk, and relocating them to a protected forest where they can live safely in the wild.
Translocating orangutans is a last resort. But for an individual like Sam, found in a vulnerable and dangerous situation, it can mean the difference between life and death.

Sam’s translocation was essential to his survival. And thanks to your kind support, and the skills and dedication of our amazing rescue team, it was a success. Sam remained healthy and stable throughout the journey to his new home.
The moment he was released, Sam headed straight for the canopy and began foraging, eating fruit, leaves, and bark. He was active, alert, and showing every sign of strong health.
He moved deeper into the forest with confidence, displaying natural survival instincts and adapting easily to his new, safe environment.
